Photos: How Students Invoke The Christmas Spirit

This is the third installment in the 4-part series on student life by Rūta Petersonaitė, a fourth year student of publishing at Vilnius University, who was studying this autumn semester in Tartu. Rūta’s previous stories explored why students had chosen Tartu as their study destination and what international student fashion and style are like.

A Robot Salesman?

How would you react when confronted with a knee-high robot that would scurry around your feet and offer you candy while talking? You are about to find out soon!

“Robots make people stop and look – they manage to evoke some kind of emotion in everyone,” says Raimond Luht, Director of BIT Systems LLC, a Tartu-based company that is planning to market robots as advertising platforms. “And where there is emotion, there is opportunity,” he adds.

BIT Systems has commissioned a team of robotics engineers at the UT Institute of Technology to build a prototype of a small, knee-high or slightly taller, advertising robot.

Alvo Aabloo, professor of polymeric materials technology at the UT Institute of Technology, told us a little about the skills of the robot which, for the time being, exists only in blueprints: “It will be able to make sounds, move around, flash lights, offer candies or distribute flyers, and talk to people.” Continue reading

Podcast: Museum of The Future (Part 1/2)

We all have been to museums. They usually make their way onto must-see lists when we travel. And even if we don’t find time for museums at home, our dear foreign guests sometimes help us out by asking us to show them our museums (which is why it’s good to be prepared).

This was the first answer to the question: Why talk about museums? If you also know that the University of Tartu has four museums, and that a notable part of the university’s research is connected to museums, then you should be convinced by now that “The Museum of the Future” is a wildly interesting and important topic.

Discussing museum of the future

From left to right: Mariann Raisma, Agnes Aljas and Pille Pruulmann-Vengerfeldt are trying to imagine the museum of the future.

Anyway, when the first snow was coming down upon us on a late November morning here in Tartu, Mariann Raisma, director of the University of Tartu History Museum; Pille Pruulmann-Vengerfeldt, head of the university’s Institute of Journalism and Communication; Agnes Aljas, our doctoral student and research secretary at the Estonian National Museum; and yours truly met at the History Museum to discuss the museum of the future.

Feel free to join the conversation in the comments!

Looking Good Is Feeling Good: International Students Present Their Case

This is the second installment in the 4-part series on student life by Rūta Petersonaitė, a fourth year student of publishing at Vilnius University, who is currently spending this autumn semester in Tartu. Rūta’s first story explored why students chose Tartu as their study destination. Don’t want to miss the coming parts? Subscribe to our blog by email or RSS.

Yves Saint Laurent once said: “Fashions fade, but style is eternal.” Someone else said that style is an expression of individualism mixed with charisma, and that fashion is something that comes after style. I am not completely sure who comes after what and who fades while others stay, but I do know some international students here in Tartu who never fade in a crowd. Each was charming in his or her own way, yet still approachable and willing to have a small chat about style issues.

Every time I travel somewhere, I love to stop for a while and stare at the people to observe their style of walk and talk, the way they are dressed, and what colors they wear. “A waste of time” – you might think, but I believe that it gives you more than just scenery, rather some hints at what a nation is really about. This is why I was so keen on meeting some stylish international students and asking them about their own attitudes regarding style and what they think it means to “be stylish” in their countries:

Diana from Poland: “For me fashion and dress are a way to stand out in the crowd and show that you are different. It’s not just about buying clothes. People can be stylish without spending a lot of money, as you can buy clothes from second-hand shops. It is not a matter of money but a matter of some feeling for fashion and style.

In my opinion, Polish people are becoming more stylish but still aren’t so creative in comparison with western countries. We are trying to build our own style though by not just buying from the main clothing shops like Zara or H&M, but also focusing on vintage shops where you can find unique pieces. We also look for inspiration on the Internet, following style and fashion blogs. Continue reading

Tartu Students on a Moon Mission

The ESMO spacecraft

About 200 students from 19 universities across Europe are working hard to get a satellite into lunar orbit in 2014.

Slovenians will design the on-board radar, Belgians will build a wide-angle camera, and Estonians will take ground control of the satellite. The project is taking place within the ESA’s Education Satellite Program, ESMO.

University of Tartu students will assemble the parts designed and built by the other participating universities and check the operational reliability of the satellite. After launch our students will be in charge of steering the satellite into lunar orbit and ensuring that it stays there.

The satellite’s weight and measurements set strict limits upon its useable load. The cubical satellite will weigh around 190 kg, and the sides measure 70 centimetres. Continue reading

TEDxTartu: Estonia Should Give Up Cash and Grow Leaders

Two shiny trailers with Estonian national TV logos blocked the entrance of the Athena conference centre last Friday. Obviously, something bigger than what Athena could accommodate was underway.

The next, rainy morning close to a hundred remarkably young and enthusiastic people were buzzing with excitement, anticipating all those world-changing ideas and inspiring talks to which both global TED and local events like TEDxTartu usually treat their hungry audiences.

After a while, the show began. The Director of the Estonian Genome Center, our Professor of Biotechnology Andres Metspalu, appeared high up on stage from behind the thick velvet curtains. He talked about personalized medicine in which gene data guides choices both in medical treatment and lifestyle. Continue reading
